The Swiss Super League is the top tier of Swiss football, established in its current format for the 2003–04 season. The first official championship was organized in the 1898/99 season. With its high ranking in the UEFA coefficient table, Switzerland is eligible for European competitions, including the Champions League. The league runs over 36 rounds from late July to May, with a winter break. Each team faces every other team four times - twice at home and twice away - in a round-robin format.
While clubs from both Switzerland and Liechtenstein compete in the league, only a Swiss club can be crowned champion. If a Liechtenstein team finishes first, the title is awarded to the highest-placed Swiss team.
