Ligue Professionnelle 1 API: records and stats
The Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 1 is the top-tier professional football league in Algeria. It represents the country’s premier football competition and forms the highest level of the Algerian football league system. Managed by the Ligue de Football Professionnel, the league features 16 clubs. At the end of each season, the two lowest-ranked teams are relegated to Ligue 2, while the top two teams from that division are promoted to replace them.
The league was established in 1962, following Algeria’s independence. The history of football in Algeria is deeply intertwined with French football. Football first appeared in France in 1872 and soon spread to North Africa, then under French rule, around 1894. The earliest Algerian clubs were founded in Oran, including CDJ Oran (Club des Joyeusetés), which established its football section on 10 July 1897, and CAL Oran (Club Athlétique Liberté Oranais), founded on 28 September 1897 with its football section.
Over more than half a century, football in French Algeria developed steadily, with numerous clubs being created and organized competitions taking place at departmental and inter-regional levels. This colonial era of football came to an end in 1962, when Algeria gained independence and concluded French colonial influence on the sport.
